What is Phrase and Clause?

   Phrase :-  

    Phrase is a group of word that makes a sense but not complete sense. 
    Phrase doesn't contain verb.
      
       E.g. :- I left keys in the room.  (in the room - is the phrase)

   Clause :-  

      Clause is a group of word that makes a complete sense. Clause contains 
    subject and verb both. It expresses a complete thought and may or may not 
    stand alone as a sentence.

      E.g. :- He is going to school
    
   There are two types of clause:-

     a) Independent Clause
     b) Dependent Clause

    a) Independent Clause :- It contains both subject and a verb and can stand 
                                             alone as a sentence.

    b) Dependent Clause :- It contains both subject and a verb but can't stand 
                                             alone as a sentence.

      E.g. :- Raj went for singing class, before i had my dinner

      Raj went for singing class - is Independent Clause
      before i had my dinner. - is Dependent Clause

How to Identify Clause

 Look for the subordinating conjunctions.

 where ,when, why, how, whom, who, which, such that, whether, despite, how,   if, before, after, as soon as, because, since, unless, although, even though, that, so that, as

Exercise

1) Fill in the blanks with appropriate phrases .

a) I told my mother about my plans for the vacation with great excitement.
b) The guard was awarded for his courage for may years.
c) Mohan has a habit of walking brisky every evening.
d) He threw a surprise party on the occasion of their anniversary.

2) Find out subordinate conjunction and subordinate clauses .

a) This is the child who plays the guitar extremely well.
b) The man who underwent surgery has recovered.
c) Although they packed woolen clothes, it was too cold to go outside .
d) Raj knows that his friends donate to a charity every month.
e) She rented the movie "twilight" which she loves watching.
f) When he left the company, he went on a world tour.
g) He skipped his breakfast so that he could reach the office on time.
